It's amazing that the Pope, who should be an educated man, does not know the difference between an oligarchy and capitalism. South america is full of oligarchies, not capitalist societies. Where is his alternative option? Communism? What good is trying to tear something down without a solution. If he doesn't believe in capitalism, does he think some fantasy world will come true where everyone works as hard as they can simply for the good of their brother out of the goodness of their hearts? That is a noble dream -- but it is a dream. If society shows one thing it's that if you take care of a lot of people's basic needs, they will neither be happy or productive -- just poor and staying alive - stuck in the same rut for the rest of their lives. Capitalism isn't perfect, but unlike most other systems it offers almost anyone the chance to lift their status if they use their brain or whatever other gifts they have to their advantage. For those who will point to socialism, I say where would those societies be now without the more capitalist ones to trade with? Their success only exists primarily in their ability to trade with non socialist societies. Without that commerce to support the state the system is unsustainable -- an economically healthy one anyway -- you can still be a poor socialist state. PS - the difference why the diference between the top and bottom is greater in a capitalist country than non is because more people make LESS in a non-capitalist society.
